When it comes to planning a birthday photoshoot, the very first thing you should decide on is the photographer.

Choosing someone whose style you genuinely resonate with is so important. Make sure the work they show on their account reflects the kind of photos you’d want for your own birthday shoot. That’s the first and most crucial step in the process.

Once you’ve found a photographer, you’ll be able to figure out whether you want your shoot to be on location , whether that’s outdoors, in your home, or at a space you rent, or in a studio setting. For me, at Camille Cupid Photography, I have my own studio based in Pittsburgh, PA and birthday sessions include studio time in the package price. A lot of my clients love the look and feel of that studio work, so it’s one less thing they have to worry about.

After that, it’s time to decide on the theme. Do you want something classy, elegant, and sophisticated? Something flirty, fun, cute, girly, or sexy? Are you going for 30 and flirty, sexy 60s or fine 29? This is where your vision really starts to take shape. Start by carrying a Pinterest board of images you love to show your photographer.

How far in advance you book your session depends on the photographer, but Camille Cupid Photography, I ask that clients book at least two weeks ahead of their birthday. Photos are delivered within 14 days, so I always suggest to people to book at least 16 to 18 days in advance to give themselves a little buffer. The more time you have, the better especially if you want to plan out your outfit, hair, theme, or props. It also gives you time to lock in your date and secure your deposit.

As for what to wear I truly believe the best outfits are the ones you feel most confident and sexy in. That looks different for everyone. Some people love tight-fitting outfits; others feel more comfortable in flowy looks. I always suggest choosing a dress or fit that covers the areas you might be insecure about while highlighting the features you love most. Maybe that’s your collarbone, your hips, your legs, whatever it is, wear something that makes you feel good in your body.

One thing I really emphasize with clients is color. Monochromatic looks are lovely and if that’s your vibe, do it. But depth and shadow in photos create emotion and dimension which is what I like to showcase in my work. Choosing colors that contrast your skin tone, hair color, and background really matters. I learned this tip on TikTok, and it changed everything. If you have dark hair, avoid black backdrops unless you have a hair light. If you're blonde, white backdrops may wash you out. It’s all about contrast, it helps the image pop and keeps you from blending into the background. People really overlook this, but it can make a huge difference in your photos.

And of course, we can’t talk about birthday shoots without talking about props. Some of my favorite props are cake, glitter, flowers, confetti, balloons, candles, or even vintage phones, cowboy hats, boots, stoles, desks, chairs, anything that fits your vibe and brings your theme to life. I actually work with a local cake maker here in Pittsburgh whose work I love, and that’s always a fun addition to the shoot.

Making your birthday shoot feel personal to you is one of the most important parts. I always ask, What do you gravitate toward? What are your favorite colors? What speaks to you? Infuse those elements into your session because the small details matter. It’s not just about photos, it’s about capturing your personality. And that goes back to why choosing the right photographer is so key.

As photographers, we want this process to feel seamless and smooth. That’s why I always offer a photo shoot prep and packing guide, it helps you stay organized and avoid forgetting things. From start to finish, it’s about communication, comfort, and experience. I take pride in creating a space where my clients feel at home, whether we’re shooting in-studio or on location. Hospitality is huge to me. I want you to feel confident, calm, and celebrated every step of the way.
